Quaker peace support for primary schools in Bristol
The aim of the project is to help children in Primary schools learn to treat each other with respect, work co-operatively, and resolve problems constructively, and so create a peaceful atmosphere. The project combines SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development) with elements of Peace Education.
How does it work?
The project is delivered through a mixture of talking, sharing, role play, exercises and games, as well as quiet periods and mindful breathing, to help children develop the skills to handle their own stresses. Stories are used to focus attention on particular issues. Much of the work is done in circle time, or in small groups. We work with a maximum of 15 children at a time, in 6 one-hour sessions over six weeks.
What skills will the children develop?
The sessions begin with the individual and work outwards. The first sessions focus on developing peace within, improving resilience, celebrating our inner selves and discussing how to handle worries. We then look at peace between – handling anger, recognising and respecting that others may disagree with you, and developing peaceful relationships. The final sessions look at peace throughout, to help develop a peaceful school community that meets everyone’s needs and is the responsibility of everyone in school. The pupils are encouraged to develop an awareness of different perceptions of situations and to recognise the challenges of decision-making, as well as the potential of co- operation and mediation.
Who delivers the sessions?
The sessions are delivered by two trained, DBS-checked volunteers, and are free.
What is required from the school?
We ask for a non-refundable deposit of £25. An initial meeting with the teacher is a requirement before the sessions begin. The programme is flexible, and can be adjusted to fit with the school’s timetable.
