As part of an on-going national re-examination of Quakers’ role in transatlantic chattel slavery, Bristol Quakers have formally acknowledged their role in the forced transportation of more than 13 million Africans across the Atlantic as slaves. The text acknowledges that ‘The unpaid forced labour of enslaved African people was the cornerstone of the ‘economy of enslavement’ which made our city and our country wealthy and opened the way for three centuries of colonial exploitation.
