Thought for the Day is a 200 word feature which goes out during the breakfast show every weekday. The speakers, drawn from a wide variety of religious groups, provide a spiritual take on topical issues covered in that morning’s show. Quakers have been making regular contributions to this slot for a number of years. Kate Taylor is our representative at the moment. Here is the script from 15th September, one week after the death of Queen Elizabeth the Second.
Good morning, Claire.
For once I almost don’t know what to say. There is so much raw emotion around at the moment that I’m finding it difficult to know where to start. I am not a natural royalist but I do have a lot of respect for the late Queen. As far as I can see she made a promise that she would do her best for the people of Great Britain and the Commonwealth, and she did. She did her homework and she treated everybody with respect, which counts for a lot in my book. It can’t have been an easy job sometimes, and she obviously had other family stuff to deal with as well, but, as many people have said, her faith gave her strength and guidance.
I also have a lot of time for her eldest son, our new King. I sense that he too is a deeply spiritual person. His genuine concern for our environment and for people has been evident for many years. In this I think in many respects he has been ahead of his time. I sympathise with him, the death of a parent is never easy, although it is in the natural way of things, and I sincerely wish him all the best for the future.
Long live the King.
